It is 25 years since Klaus Flugge at Andersen Press first published Elmer - The Patchwork Elephant, one of the best-loved and most iconic characters in picture books, created by the ever-versatile David McKee. Elmer is universally loved, with the books translated into over 40 languages and more than five million copies sold worldwide. The illustrationCupboard Gallery are to hold a year-long celebration of this significant 25th anniversary by presenting a comprehensive exhibition of original Elmer artwork.
David McKee and his publisher Klaus Flugge are the best of friends, and the success of the Elmer series, with over 40 books already published, is a testament to this inspiring and creative partnership. The exhibition is as much a celebration of their friendship as it is of Elmer. On display will be a broad range of artwork from some of the very earliest books right through to the present day, from vignettes to full-page colour spreads, and original pencil working drawings for the published books. The exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the working methods of a truly original and justly famous author/illustrator, as well as an opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire rare original pieces.
All artwork is for sale, with prices starting from only £350. Signed books will be offered for sale and there will be special copies of the 25th anniversary Edition of the very first Elmer book which will only be available for sale at the Gallery.
