Intelligence Squared is a global leader in the live event industry and Heywood Hill is proud to be their official bookseller across UK events.
Over the last few months, we have been bookselling the great new works of Zadie Smith, Max Hastings, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Yomi Adegoke and Jonathan Haidt, amongst many other brilliant writers.
This autumn, we will be selling the new book by Pulitzer prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum, Autocracy Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World. Applebaum will be speaking in conversation with Jonny Dymond about the intersection between capitalism and politics that has created an emergent form of autocracy for the twenty-first century that she titles ‘autocracy inc.’ Only a couple of weeks before the US election, Applebaum will analyse the development of oligarchies and kleptocracies across the globe and the necessity of avoiding a descent into corporate and political dictatorship. This is certain to be an incisive event for anyone who wants to understand the inner workings of dictatorships and the prescient dangers in our democracy.

On September 17, Katy Hessel comes to the Intelligence Squared stage in conversation with Pandora Sykes to discuss writing women back into art history. Talking about her bestselling book The Story of Art Without Men, she will pay homage to greats such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Hilma af Klint, Tracey Emin and Kara Walker while also shining a light on lesser known figures such as Lavinia Fontana, thought to be one of the first women in Western art to paint female nudes in 1595. Spanning over five centuries from the Cornish coast to Manhattan, Nigeria to Japan, this promises to be a treat for art lovers and history buffs alike.
