About the Book:
John Minshaw, who established his eponymous practice in 1977, is one of Britain’s most influential interior designers. Admired by peers for an approach that fuses a pared-back neo-classicism with unusual materials, he is one of twelve creatives included in House & Garden’s ‘Pantheon of Greats’. This monograph captures six recent projects: from a reinvented Kensington townhouse and grand Channel Islands newbuild, to his own equally imaginative homes in London and the Cotswolds. Extensive colour photography by leading names such as James McDonald and Fritz von der Schulenberg is accompanied by John’s finely-detailed drawings: the prelude to all his commissions.
The introduction explores the influences behind a career spanning five decades. At art school in London his ceramics tutors Lucy Rie and Hans Coper opened his eyes to Modernism. In the progressive 1960s John made avant-garde sculpture and also ran a successful furniture workshop. One of his earliest interiors clients was the exacting fashion designer Jean Muir who recognised his affinity for form, colour – and space. He has gone on to design and build luxurious, original private homes across the world.
