This latest rethinking of our world history by Peter Frankopan, senior research fellow at Oxford University, moves our focus from the West to the Mediterrannean and the hundreds of trade routes running eastward from there. Frankopan argues that the major historical events happened not in Europe but further east, until the discovery of the New World at least. As with any work this expansive there are a few details that fall victim to fortune but these are certainly made up for by the depth and breadth of his reading, the bold connections he makes between diverse cultures and the vivd detail he has used so effectively from previously unused German and Russian sources.
