Jung Chang says: 'Life in the Japanese-occupied territory and post-war China under Chiang Kai-shek is brilliantly evoked by Eileen Chang, arguably the best modern female Chinese writer. Chang (not related to me) draws inspiration from big cities, especially Shanghai and Hong Kong. In her writings, politics is only in the background. Human relationships are her concern, which she explores with a clear eye and cool subtlety, free of sentimentality. Lust, Caution (which was made into a film by Ang Lee in 2007) is typical of her style.
